Job Summary

The overall responsibility of the Head teacher is to oversee all scheduled classroom instruction and other LA activities in accordance with the Organization’s policies and procedures to deliver quality and holistic education to learners. Monitor the conduct and discipline of academic staff and learners. Preside over the social, economic and professional needs of academic staff. Ensure consistency in the implementation of policies and procedures of the ministry as outlined in the Education Policy document. Guide Legacy Academy staff on professional conduct and hold them accountable for any shortfalls. Promote interests of stakeholders who are the teachers, learners and caretakers. S/He is also the custodian of all Legacy Academy resources through prudent use and monitoring.

Dimensions of the Role

Specific Tasks

1. People Management

Facilitate and lead LA based (scheduled and unscheduled) meetings, and attend regularly scheduled meetings with supervisor.

Listen to staff concerns and needs and provide feedback at an appropriate time to supervisor.

Track attendance/ leave days of LA staff

Ensure proper adherence to the policies and goals of the organization for subordinates

Delegate effectively to subordinates on all administrative, logistical, and other overall programmatic assignments.

Advocate for and ensure the safety and protection of staff when reporting child protection or other sensitive issues.

Create a conducive work environment that encourages a culture of hard work, team spirit and promotion of overall safety and wellbeing of children.

Attend to all staff concerns and needs, relay them to Deputy Program Managers and provide timely feedback to concerned LA staff.

In collaboration with the appropriate DPMs, oversee the activities of the CPOs and CDOs in tracking student attendance and other home/community concerns and provide timely feedback to all stakeholders.

Protect the integrity and privacy of LA staff and learners at all times (Safe guarding confidential information/documents)

Locally initiate mediation in conflict management among staff.

Delegate effectively to subordinates on all administrative, logistical, and other overall programmatic assignments.

Maintain a comprehensive assessment report on the performance of each legacy academic staff. This will be done through regular classroom observations as well as how they implement the ministry’s education policies and procedures.

Assess teacher’s requests for absence at work and initiate measures to ensure learners scheduled learning program are catered for.

Document and maintain in the Binder academic staff leave days, staff and learners’ cases of indiscipline for reference and decision making.

2. Leadership

Develop, monitor and evaluate strategic goals and plans for teams.

Engage in decision making consultation with supervisors and subordinates.

Building the capacity of subordinates in problem solving to mitigate disruptions that may arise in the LA.

Create a school culture that promotes good values among learners and staff as required by the ministry policies.

Implement individual professional goals for all direct reports.

Solicit and give appropriate feedback to staff to encourage development of strengths and address areas of growth.

Propose and develop policies to strengthen and address various programs and initiatives in the Legacy Academies.

To stimulate and promote a culture of togetherness, cohesion, unity among the Legacy Academy staff.

Intentionally build relationships with your teams to foster an environment of collaboration and freedom.

Provide incentives (e.g. through locally prepared certificates of achievement) for and encouragement to staff.

Propose and forward suggestions to the DPM on issues that may enhance and improve the management of the campus. I.e. lapses in education policies and procedures.

Interpret education policies and procedures to ensure consistent implementation.

Be a role model and promote teamwork and professional relationships among legacy academic staff.

3. Lesson Delivery & Staff Performance

Ensure legacy academic staff implement learning activities professionally and effectively. They should use schemes of work based on the newly revised curriculum and produce a detailed lesson plan that promotes effective teaching.

Model academic legacy staff in the use of effective instructional strategies in class for effective learning.

Promote the use of the English language by Legacy academics and learners within the school grounds and in the classroom.

Ensure Legacy academic staff implement skills learned during workshops and trainings organized by the ministry, this includes school-based training as well.

Monitor and evaluate Legacy academic staff through regular class observations, a minimum of two observations per term.

Conduct classroom/ school walk-throughs to ensure academic staff is in their teaching zones.

Coach and mentor the deputy head teacher and/or specific teachers in modern-day teaching strategies and methods

Hold teachers accountable for failure to implement procedures and policies. This will be done using failure to comply documents and crucial conversations write-ups. This should be reflected in the head’s binder.

Design and implement appropriate interventions to improve the performance of individual struggling staff in the area of teaching.

Review legacy academy staff lesson plans weekly and schemes of work at the start of the term.

4. Professional Development & Talent Management

Provide appropriate feedback to legacy academic staff in their classroom performance. Highlight individual legacy academic staff areas of strength and weakness.

Model, coach, and mentor legacy academic staff to enhance their performance or grow their areas of weakness.

Groom legacy academic staff for leadership roles, those showing appropriate traits.

Document legacy academic staff leave days and absence from work. The records should be filed in the binder.

5. Discipline

Handle, and document legacy academic staff and students disciplinary and grievance cases according to the outlined legacy academic staff and learner’s code of conduct.

Liaise with other Legacy Academy staff on issues that affect learner’s welfare such as incidences of child abuse, prolonged absence from school, discharges, readmissions, and parent conferencing.

6. Time Management

Ensure legacy academic staff report for work on time, begin scheduled learning activities on time, and break, assembly, lunch, and dismissal are conducted according to scheduled times.

The Head Teacher should arrive at at least 30 minutes before other legacy academic staff arrive, and maintain a log book on each school day to monitor reporting time.

Monitor learner’s punctuality and apply appropriate measures to curb late coming.

7. School Maintenance & Facilities Management

Conduct walk-throughs and promptly find solutions if the environment, toilets, and classrooms are not clean to the expected standards.

Receive and create an inventory for all items/supplies delivered to the campus and also out of the campus. Monitor the use of consumables and non-consumables on campus.

Relay and report any campus and legacy academic staff needs to the deputy program manager. This includes maintenance and supplies.

Sensitize legacy academic staff on the prudent use of campus resources and materials in their custody.

8. Communication

Guide legacy academic staff on the laid down channels of communication with direct supervisors and all other campus staff members.

Promptly communicate using retrievable mode important information to the campus manager.

9. School Security

Ensure that classrooms are locked at the end of each day school day and safely keep the keys. Keys should only be given to credible legacy staff if the head teacher will not be available.

· Monitor guards at the gate to ensure they perform accordingly

10. Stakeholder Management

Receive and attend to caregivers on issues of learners. Attend to official visitors at the campus.

11. Records Management

Maintain a binder for the school. The binder will contain records for the following data:

Teacher Leave/ Attendance/ timeliness

Teacher failure to comply with forms

Teacher lesson plan checks

AAR folders for all the students

Crucial conversations on legacy academic staff

Learners’ disciplinary cases

Interventions for struggling legacy academic staff

Lesson Observation forms

Any other forms deemed necessary by the FLMZ office


Administer and supervise locally set tests

Work with Exams and Curriculum Coordinator to ensure national examinations are well conducted and all registered candidates participate.

Provide credible and accurate information on learners as requested by Examination and curriculum Coordinator.

The Employee shall also be expected to undertake any responsibilities as may be delegated by his or her supervisor.

Academic and Professional Requirements:

Grade 12 certificate.

Bachelor’s Degree in Education or equivalent

Teaching Council of Zambia Certified

Must have worked in a similar position for 3 years

Must be computer literate
