SOS Children’s Villages Zambia is a child focussed organization and an affiliate of the SOS Children Villages International. It is non-governmental, non-political, non-denominational, and non-racial. Its overall mission is to build families for children in need, help them shape their own futures and share in the development of their communities. To realise the mission of the organisation, SOS CV Zambia is recruiting a National Director who will lead the organisation.

Role Purpose

  • Leads and develops the national association (the Association) as its Chief Executive Officer, ensuring effective delivery of and accountability of programmes and services and funding to the vulnerable children, families and communities within the framework of the organization’s Vision, Mission & Values.

Key Role Objectives

  • Leads the strategic growth and development of the national association according to the organization’s defined standards
  • Ensures the operational effectiveness of all programmes, and guarantees a child care quality based on the SOS Kinderdorf International’s principles, model of child care, and guidelines within the country’s legal frames
  • Ensures strong local rooting by promoting the Association’s local integration and by building recognition at all levels.
  • Promotes and manage the appropriate image of the Association, both internally and externally, using our principles, values, standards, and guidelines in bringing to life our brand
  • Develops the human capacity of the Association to ensure its long-term growth and stability.
  • Ensures the effective management of and accountability for the Associations resources.
  • Ensures the effective planning and implementation of local fundraising initiatives to support the Association’s annual budget.
  • Building a strong base of the ‘Friends of SOS Zambia’ and ‘Committed Givers’ both locally and internationally.
  • Managing people and performance for positive and effective results.

Key Specific tasks and responsibilities

  • Ensures resources are focussed on building strong facilities and programmes. He/she reviews and evaluates the programmes and facilitates steps to ensure that agreed plans and policies are implemented, and provides capacity building and technical support where necessary.
  • Develops, train and retain the highly skilled teams to ensure the organization has the necessary competencies to fulfil its long-term goals and objectives.
  • Lead implementation of organizational strategic plan to ensure sustainable programmes that are operationally effective and guarantee quality child-care according to defined standards.
  • Forges partnerships with like-minded organizations, donors and other agencies who work for the rights of children without parental care or at risk of losing their parental care. He/she pursues advocacy objectives with NGO and/or UN Child rights forums and in partnership with other NGOs. He/she establishes sound relationships with relevant government authorities and seeks government recognition and support for SOS Children’s Villages work as well as building solid relationships with the appropriate UN and donor agencies.
  • Oversees fundraising, pursues government support and private sources to maximize the resource mobilisation potential in the country and beyond.
  • Ensure accountability and compliance to organization policies, standards and procedures and act on agreements as guided by the regional office to ensure international strategies are implemented.
  • Develop projections and annual budgets for effective and sustainable management of the organization’s financial and other resources.
  • Presents plans, reports and proposals to the Board of Trustees and/or Board sub-committees, and ensures that board decisions/resolutions are effectively translated into clear actions. He/she supports the development of the Board and Association members through initiating orientation and other activities as directed by the Board through the Board Chairperson.
  • Ensures a smooth flow of communication between National Association and the SOS Children Villages International including adherence to reporting requirements; maintains effective communication structures and channels to facilitate this.

Qualifications and experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Business, Law, Public Policy and Social Sciences, A Master’s degree is an added advantage.
  • Ten 10 years’ experience in developmental work at senior management and leadership positions. Senior Management experience in a corporate environment is an added advantage.
  • A good understanding of child rights and child development issues.
  • Experience in developing, nurturing and implementing development programmes and fundraising by establishing long-term partnerships with stakeholders who include government, bilateral donors and private sector.
  • Building a strong base of the ‘Friends of SOS Zambia’ and ‘Committed Givers’ both locally and internationally.
  • Strong influential and executive leadership style, an articulate and confident manager able to spur confidence in the organisation, working closely with the Board for governance and management
  • A successful track record working with and building high-performance teams in a multi-cultural setting.
  • Must have strong managerial experience and leadership abilities to handle significant number of staff and program participants.
  • Must be well networked with government and other likeminded organizations in Zambia and beyond.

  • Excellent problem-solving, technical, managerial, and financial analysis skills and a focus on producing efficient, reliable, and cost-effective data solutions as an individual or as part of a team.
  • Strong ability to manage and account for the donor funding, with a focus on building strong internal MIS for monitoring and evaluation.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Demonstrated team player with effective cross-cultural interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability in meeting deadlines while producing quality results.
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English, including evidence of quality report writing and presentations.
  • Experience working with a board of trustees of directors and in formulating board papers for reporting purposes.
