Job Purpose

In close coordination with the Landscape Manager and Wildlife Team Leader the Wildlife Officer will lead the development, execution and monitoring of wildlife management focussed activities in the Silowana Complex.

Key Duties and Responsibilities;

Facilitate Collaboration and Build Support for Wildlife Conservation – engage with DNPW staff, community members and the other stakeholders on a day-to-day basis to facilitate the strengthening of relationships, understanding and coordination in wildlife management.

Capacity Building – provide and/or facilitate technical inputs, accompaniment and training to Community Resource Boards and Village Action Groups in the mitigation of Human Wildlife Conflict, Habitat Management, Law Enforcement and Wildlife Monitoring.

Strengthen Wildlife Monitoring Systems – support the improvement and extension of wildlife monitoring systems ensuring that multiple stakeholders are able to contribute, share and analyse key data.

Infrastructure Development – support the planning, tendering and monitoring of infrastructure development within the park (e.g. boreholes, Intensive Protective Zone, Scout facilities, Tourist Camps).

Restocking – provide coordination and operational support to the preparations, transportation and delivery of species for restocking and the monitoring the survival, dispersal, and seasonal movement of released animals.

Research – support the planning and logistical arrangements and coordination of applied research and /or monitoring activities, including species counts, habitat monitoring, aerial surveys, collaring and transect counts.

Wildlife Habitat Management- support and coordinate implementation of wildlife habitat management activities such as fire management, corridor management, etc

Provide regularised updates to both the Landscape Manager and Wildlife Team Leader on the progress of activities and contribute to the development of the programme by sharing observations, providing recommendations and foresight.

Skills and Competencies

Good communication skills in English – including writing, speaking and listening.

Speaking Lozi would be a strong asset.

Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to moderate and facilitate conflict resolution.

Ability to work under tight deadlines, high pressure situations.

Good financial planning and management skills.

Qualifications and Experience

First Degree or Advanced Diploma in Wildlife Management //Natural Resources Management; or equivalent professional experience.

At least 3 years field experience of working in wildlife conservation (planning, delivering and monitoring activities).

Experience with CBNRM programmes and/or working with communities.

Experience with stakeholder engagement in Zambia would be a strong asset.

Strong knowledge of wildlife management operations and community development would be an advantage.

A good understanding of wildlife research techniques, protected area management, wildlife law enforcement, or wildlife monitoring systems would be an advantage.

Must have a Valid driver’s licence with three year’s driving experience

Must be willing to be based in the Western Province of Zambia (ideally Sesheke)
