Barrick Lumwana Mining Company Ltd (LMC), a copper mining company owned by Barrick Gold Corporation is situated in the North-Western region of Zambia, some 300 km west of the Zambian Copperbelt and 95 km south west of the provincial capital of Solwezi. The mine is a multi-pit, multi staged operation mining approximately 100MT of ore and waste per annum and producing copper concentrates containing an average of 120,000 tonnes of copper metal per year over a twenty (20) year mine life, making Lumwana the largest single open cut copper mine in Africa. The Company is now looking for an experienced and qualified individual to be considered for the position of Mining and Metallurgical Data Scientist.
Role Summary
Reporting to the Operations Excellence Manager, you will be responsible for the design and development of necessary data analytics for plant and mine operational performance and cost management.
Your duties will include but not limited to the following:
Responsibilities
Build tracking systems to support specific improvement initiatives, for example truck segment speed compliance or operating parameter compliance per operator over time
Develop a site reporting database containing the “source of truth”, both structured and non-structured, financial and non-financial data
Build reporting and dashboarding systems
Setup systems for the collection, storage and integration of data to better inform decision making
Linking operational plans and execution tracking with sensor data
Assess information gaps and implement mitigating projects
Implement and maintain safe work procedures and promote high safety and health awareness.
Promote and comply with the LMC Occupational Health & Safety Policy.
Develop objectives for sharing common infrastructure and support services across Barrick and cascade this throughout the operation.
Promote and support data quality management
Qualifications
Degree in Mining/Chemical/Metallurgical/Mechanical Engineering
Proficient in SQL, machine learning, MineCare®, OSIPi®, Modular Dispatch®, PowerBI®, Python, pandas and C#
Three (3) years’ experience in a data analysis type role in a large scale mining environment
Experience in managing costs and budgeting
High level understanding of all relevant legislation affecting the employment and safety of persons in the mining industry in Zambia
Good computer skills with the ability to use integrated management systems, word processing, presentation and spreadsheet applications
Member (or eligible to become) of the Engineering Institution of Zambia
